Philadelphia's Big League Sandwich - the Schmitter - is a forty-something year old creation of McNally's Tavern...now available at Citizens Bank
Park (Phillies, where all these pictures were taken) and Lincoln Financial Field (Eagles).
The Schmitter is a sort of Cheesesteak, the kind that makes you understand why 'cheese' gets top billing in the name. There was so much cheese on the sandwiches SG sampled that we initially thought it was mayonnaise, but one bite proved our eyes wrong.
We liked what we tried but felt something was missing - maybe hot sauce or more flavorful onions - or maybe there was too much bland cheese. To us the Schmitter was more of a 'grilled cheese' than a cheesesteak. We think a sandwich with so many ingredients should be somewhat tastier.
We would, however, give the Schmitter another chance when we next return to the ballpark, or if we go to an Eagles game, or if we ever have the opportunity to check out the tavern that is home of the sandwich. You see, we liked the sandwich...we just didn't love it.
