The Red Sox host the Yankees this Sunday (yea!) at 8:05pm. In honor of their ballpark, here are some Hot Dog Facts given to me by the Fenway Frank people, Kayem (the official team hot dogs):
-There is only one major league ballpark that sells more sausages than it does hot dogs - Miller Park in Milwaukee, home of the Brewers.
-A 2008 poll found that 63% of baseball fans listed hot dogs as the one ballpark food they could not live without.
-88% of those polled said they have eaten or will eat a hot dog at a sporting event this year.
-An average baseball hot dog vendor sells about 150 hot dogs per game and walks an average of four to five miles each game.
-A vendor's hot dog bin weighs approximately 40lbs fully loaded.
-Babe Ruth once ate 12 hot dogs and 8 bottles of soda between games of a doubleheader.
-The most popular condiment for adults is mustard, while children prefer ketchup.
-The most exclusive spot to sell hot dogs isn't in a ballpark, or football stadium, or at the racetrack.
It's outside of New York's
Metropolitan Museum of Art where Thomas Makkos pays $415,670 per year for the city's top dog spot.
A traditional Fenway Frank is boiled and grilled, served on a New England-style bun (top split), topped with mustard and relish. This season there's a new guy in town - the Monster Dog - an all beef, 10" long, 5.4 ounce hot dog. You can get one on Yawkey Way, the Green Monster or in the Rightfield Roofdeck seats.
Someone needs to send me a photo of their Monster Dog on the Green Monster. Thank you. I'll say nice things about your team that day. Like: Fenway is a ballpark everyone should try to visit before it gets torn down and given a corporate name (and more comfortable seats with better views).
Having had the hot dogs at Miller Park, I understand why they sell so more sausages. This was back in '01, but it was the worst ballgame hot dog I ever had. (Other than that the park was great though.)
