George Wilson's Green Beans

I am not going to comment on Plaxico Burress because that situation is so ridiculous. I am going to talk about George Wilson, and I am going to categorize this post "green" since I have no "vegetable" category.

George Wilson gave his Gridiron Green Beans recipe to ESPN Magazine. It's pretty hilarious given the lack of measurements (everything is 'to taste'). What is not funny at all is his choice of canned beans over frozen or fresh. Then you cook them "fully submerged" for 30 minutes. Holy Cow. That's not beans, that's baby food. Who kills their green beans like this? Why?

Anyway, it's still fun for me. And online there's corn, baked beans, and baked chicken too.

Monday Night Football in Buffalo: Great Lakes Battle

Well, it's not quite the opening half that everyone predicted but at least it's not snowing (yet). In honor of the 73,000 fans watching the game at Ralph Wilson stadium I have one thing to say: Gabriel's Gate.It's not near the stadium (hardly anything is) but it is a place where you can eat magically delicious wings. And I don't mean magic in a there's-drugs-in-there way. Though it wouldn't necessarily surprise me.

If my other computer could access my new internet I'd happily upload pictures of the restaurant, some wings, and even a chicken sandwich (because a giant plate of wings isn't enough bird for TFMJ and me). That picture fantasy isn't happening tonight. Sorry.

Mighty Taco, exciting mexican food buffalo style

 when we were in Buffalo, TFMJ tried to convince me that Mighty Taco was not fast food. he's funny. after our mini feast (which was really apps before Ted's hot dogs) we hung out in the parking lot. see picture. does that scream high school slacker or what? I'm making that my facebook photo. the Giants won't hate me.

Buffalo Jills Cheerleaders

TFMJ and I went to check out the Field House where the Buffalo Bills practice (and whatever else) and we ran into some of the Buffalo Jills and a bunch of little girls. We think the little ones were the Junior Jills.

Outside the Field House I had a brilliant conversation with three of the adult Jills:

Me: Are you guys the cheerleaders?
Them: Yes.
Me: The real cheerleaders?
Them (still nice and laughing): Yes.

I'm hoping they'll write in and 'talk' to us. A quick run through the bios of the 2007 team (pictured) game me a sense of some cheerleader favorite foods: ice cream, bbq chicken, wings, pumpkin pie. Where do the Jills like to eat? What do they eat before/after a game? Scoreboard Gourmet wants to know.

White Hot Dogs in Western New York

White Hots, Snappys, whatever you call 'em TFMJ and I lo+ve those white hot dogs. Not the fat ones; the regular hot dog sized ones. Excellent with some sort of onion (raw or cooked) and non-yellow mustard. Why all the yellow mustard up here? It's so, um, crappy.

We're planning a White and Red Hots party for the fall. It will be a tribute to Western New York sports: Bills, Bison, Red Wings, Rhinos, Chiefs. And we'll compare the various brands: Zweigle's, Sahlen's, Hofmann's, etc.

We also plan to have Saranac beers and sodas, Labatt's Blue and Genesse.

What did I forget?

Rochester Red Wings, we're coming, stomachs full of Buffalo's Best

Usually I do not stuff myself so much that I'm still feeling massively full the following morning. Yesterday, however, was a major Buffalo Gorge Fest. I'll put up pictures and details in the next few days but for now let me give you a taste...

Schwabl's Beef on Weck (incl potato salad and cole slaw), Louie's Red Hot with the Works (incl french fries), grilled Italian Sausage at Buffalo Bison (Dunn Tire Park) followed by grilled Hot Dog, popcorn (and Perry's ice cream for TFMJ), Gabriel's Gate medium Wings and chicken sandwich (mostly ate the sprouts since my body was severely veggie deprived at that point), and then, though I was so so full, chocolate covered strawberries. All this plus a few beers and a glass of wine (we stopped at a gallery on Allen Street).

Yikes. How am I going to handle the Garbage Plate in my future?

Red Osier Roast Beef Sandwiches

I heard you can get Red Osier Roast Beef sandwiches in Rochester (at the Red Wings, Twins Triple-A) but I did not expect to find them in Pawtucket (Paw Sox, Red Sox Triple-A).
Turns out the Buffalo Bison (Indians Triple-A), the Cleveland Browns, Buffalo Bills, and Tampa Bay Lightning serve these prime rib sandies too.

One more comment on Pawtucket, slim pickings in terms of food. Red Osier was the best looking food in the ballpark, and it wasn't exactly a crowded stand, and it's certainly not a local product. Where's the delicious brothy Rhode Island clam chowder? How about some lobster? What else to they make/grow/fish for in that tiny New England state?

where to watch NY Teams in Foggy Bottom, and eat and drink too

51st Street Tavern, a restaurant/bar with 6 TV's, is the place in Foggy Bottom to watch NY teams compete. I'm talking Giants, Jets, Bills, Yankees, and Mets. It's recommended to call ahead and confirm the showing of your game.

The Giants are in London(!) today; they play the Dolphins at 1pm. First NFL game outside of North America.
And the Bills are at the Meadowlands v the Jets at 4:15pm.

Buffalo's Gameday Experience (it's a place)
