the terrible state of Daytona Interntl Speedway food concessions

D3chairsbunthis picture (right) is perfect because it's the ideal visualization of food concessions at the Daytona International Speedway, and because the multicolor folding-chair type seats in the frontstretch are aesthetically pleasing.

Do you see that little hamburger bun? that's about how much food was available after lap 30 of the 500. I'm serious. actually, I can only speak to the state of superstretch food concessions affairs which were, in a word, appalling. but I have to guess things were equally bad on the other side of the huge track.
D5burger

You could not get a pretzel, peanuts, popcorn, hot dog, or ice. I do not know how that is possible. were they surprised that more than 25 of the ? 200,000 ? people in attendance wanted something to eat or drink?

this woman (left) was smart. she went early for her food. I'd really love to know how it's possible that a venue with 50-years of experience was so disorganized?

Ben's Chili Bowl in Nationals Stadium?

anyone know anything about Ben's Chili Bowl having an outpost in the new Nationals Stadium?

here's something I read on the Jaunt, by Mark Williams Jr...

For those folks in the Washington, D.C. area there is some exciting news for your innards in the works. Local establishment, Ben's Chili Bowl, is in talks right now with the Washington Nationals for a possible spot among food vendors at the Nats' new park. Nothing has been officially determined, but according to Ben's co-owner -- Kamal Ali -- there seems to be a very good chance for an agreement as the discussion progresses.

here's the link to the full post.

NYC sports bars; NFL Sunday Ticket and Angry Wades

hey - this site lists some of NYC's sports bars. great. but we still need a listing of sports bars that have the NFL Sunday Ticket. anyone? anyone?

friends of Scoreboard Gourmet seached high and low in Brooklyn Heights - Cobble Hill - Boerum Hill - Carroll Gardens for a bar that has the Sunday Ticket. They landed in Angry Wades at 222 Smith Street near the Bergen F stop.

on football Sundays, Angry Wades runs a grill outside to make burgers for hungry NFL fans. get a ticket at the bar and get your burger out front. It's a good bar and not too crowded. I don't know where everyone else in the surrounding neighborhoods watches football?

no burgers at White Castle's Empire State Arm Wrestling Championships

Top ArmWrestling talent from around the world gathered this afternoon in NYC's Port Authority Bus Terminal to duke it out and determine who is the Empire State Golden Arm Tournament of Arms Champion. The matches - one at a time - took place under the flag of White Castle, the event's sponsor. But there were no burgers at the tournament and there weren't even any burgers for the competitors.

Not that they mind. Every ArmWrestler SG spoke to admitted that they either did not eat burgers or they did not eat White Castle. Some even laughed at the thought of eating White Castle. One answered in a way that can only be relayed as TMI.

Let's take a moment to discuss the event itself. Two ArmWrestlers are called to the, um, table. The ref lines up their elbows and hands while the competitors wriggle their way into their preferred starting position (leaning back, leaning forward, etc). After a quick "Ready Go" the match begins, Most matches are pretty quick - that's when it's easy to understand to won. Some matches are longer and those are generally more confusing,

Don't believe me? "I don't know what happened there" and "who won" were comments I heard after every match. Sure much of the crowd reeked of Eau de Urine but that doesn't mean they were blind.

More importantly, the competitors themselves were real gentleman - maybe I missed it but there were no female ArmWrestlers. These guys hugged each other after matches, were smiling and laughing and supporting each other. It was fun to watch big, muscular men of varying ethnicities act so, well, peaceful and normal.

"It's a big family," said amateur ArmWrestler David Milburn of Queens. "To me, it's the closest thing to heaven: no arguments and no slurs." Milburn, who took 3rd place in his class for right-hand and 2nd place for left, said the guys are all about protein before a tournament. He himself goes for fish and/or steak, and maybe a little ginsing, and definitely no White Castle.

el primer gas de pais - pepsi y beisbol

As you know, I watched a Dominican Winter League game the other day. One of the best ads in the outfield read: el primer gas de pais - pepsi y beisbol. You all know I despise pepsi but this is to good to ignore.
There also seems to be some sort of pepsi promotion going on. I have to look into that.
Here's the pepsimundo link.

Now I have to ask: is pepsi really the numero uno soda in the Republica Dominicana? no coke? why?

What Browns QBs Eat: honey and ground beef

um, yes, this info came from ESPN Magazine. Thanks again, guys.

Let's do the quick and less surprising/interesting one first. Derek Anderson eats burgers. Not unusual in the meat-loving NFL. Steak is a MAJOR theme. Sort of boring. Forgive me. Keep reading...

Brady Quinn, who celebrated his 23rd bday on the 27th, has a great pre-game food ritual: he gulps (his word) honey. Apparently his dad and uncle thought it would be good to get him all sugared up before pee wee games. Now he believes it helps coat/protect his throat against all his "yelling as a QB."
Any honey will do, but the bear bottles came to his mind. The Scoreboard Gourmet prefers manuka. The Scoreboard Gourmet also thinks honey+athletics makes sense: she has been known to down honey while hiking.

The Browns host the Seahawks on Sunday 11/4 at 4:05pm

Third Pound Burgers and Two Crap Reporters

TFMJ and I are watching the worst Yankees Game Wrap-Up ever. Not only are the reporters horrible, but the commercials are too. The only thing that makes this show tolerable is tonight's win. WOR-9, by the way, the place to watch Friday night games (and, obviously, select other nights too).

Anyway, one of the commercials was for McDonald's new Third Pound Burger. We actually had to discuss the name to make sense of it.
Does McDonald's think that a bigger burger that sounds smaller (three smaller than four) is a good idea? Do they really want people to be fatter? Can someone please explain to me why this product exists?

New Shake Shack to Open at Shea Stadium, says NYMag

The greatest hamburger mystery of our time has been solved: We (that's NYMag, not SG) have it from a high-level source near the situation that the location of the long-awaited sequel to Shake Shack is Citi Field, better known as the new Shea Stadium. (Citi Field is currently under construction; it will be finished in April 2009, in time for opening day.) And that most definitely is not all: The Union Square Hospitality Group also plans a Danny Meyer sit-down restaurant there. (We’re waiting to hear back from Meyer on both of these reports.) As for the new Shake Shack, well, if you thought ball games resulted in long lines to the bathroom … More: Danny Meyer conveyed the following message to us yesterday evening: “We think it’s a great idea and would love to do it. If you can help us figure out how to make that deal happen, Shack burgers are on the house!” Awesome. Since nowhere in the statement do we see the words “the report is 100 percent untrue” or “there will not be a Shake Shack at Citi Field,” we’re looking forward to some potato-bun frolics on Opening Day.
