Minute Maid Park, Houston Astros, plus some mid-Nov musing

Every year after the World Series, Scoreboard Gourmet wonders if it's time to shut down or go on hiatus. But then friends send her text messages like "SG will be covering hockey starting December 6th" which means she's going to a game, which means she'll be unable to ignore her urge to photograph and comment on available eats. Or, maybe she'll mostly watch the game since it will be her first live ice event in years. (Remember when SG tried to go to that Devils game?)

Anyway, this is the time of year when SG is unsure of what to cover. That's why it's time to go on the road. Feels like forever since SG left the comfort and safety of her lovely home where her upstairs neighbor's girlfriend recently discovered their apartment front doors are accessible by the same key. Yes. The B-line in SG's building has all the same locks. Phenomenal.

So let's go to Houston, shall we? It's off season but here's something to know about Minute Maid Park:  Visitors may not bring food and drink items into the ballpark.

Beers of Newark at the Rock

are people actually calling Newark's Prudential Center "the Rock"? Did that catch on?

TFMJ went to some UFC match (game? event? wasteoftime?) at the Rock and was kind enough to do some reporting for Scoreboard Gourmet. Thank you, TFMJ.

Look (left) at the bland and dreary interior of the Rock. Stick a damn Devils poster on the wall. Even the Mrs. Fields sign looks dull. Sheesh. Anyway, Beers of Newark, who knew? The Beer Trayman did. Check out his cool list of New Jersey Beer Trays.

Can someone tell me about the Beers at Beers of Newark? TFMJ didn't want to stand on line and miss any of the nearly-naked men "grappling" action.

the Devils, by the way, are home v the Islanders on Wednesday 1/16 at 7p. In case it's not clear, the home of the Devils is the Rock.

I actually went to a live game! (Devils!)

It's embarrassing how long it's been since I actually went to a game. Sheesh. What kind of food+sports reporter am I if I never go? a crappy one.

today I actually got on the PATH train and went to The Rock (aka the Prudential Center) in Newark. A cold and sunny day, a perfect winter day for some Devils hockey. TFMJ and I and a friend figured we'd get tickets at the box office. We didn't realize that Kids Jersey Giveaway Day would mean No Cheap Seats. By the time we arrived the only tickets left were for $95 seats. Yikes!

We stepped out of line to discuss. We walked around the building in search of scalpers. Nothing. We asked some secuity guards, ticket-takers, and even a sort of manager about maybe getting half-price tickets after the first period. Nope.

Then a friendly fan mentioned The Arena Bar, one block from The Rock. "It's where all the Devils fans go," he said. So we went to check it out.

By now you probably realize that my headline is misleading. I did go TO to a live game, but I did not actually go IN.
I did, however, find a perfect Scoreboard Gourmet location:

Good beer, mellow crowd (at least During the game), good wings, tenders, onion rings, mozzarella sticks, many TV's showing the Devils (and Carvel-eating kids inside)...what more can you ask for?
