How do you like that "recycling" behind the fancy taps at the new Beer concession at Yankee Stadium Gate 6 (Field Level)? Ah, Earth Day. It's this week, you know, and every week.

Yankee Stadium Compost

I was walking out by the Yankee Stadium Composting center on River Avenue the other day. Ha. Totally kidding. Imagine that? Let's talk Compost at Yankee Stadium. Here's a lesson from the EPA: Compost is organic material that can be used as a soil amendment or as a medium to grow plants.

Cascarino's Pizza at Citi Field

Which of these is the Buffalo Chicken and which is the Veggie? This is another case of Heat Lamps Do Not Flatter Food and May Even Confuse Your Camera Especially If You Are Already Camera-dumb. SG doesn't usually eat pizza at baseball games but has been tempted by Cascarino's because live, at Citi Field, it looks much much better than it does here. But this picture is funny. Laugh.  Cascarinos has 4 locations at Citi Field - behind the CF scoreboard (aka Taste of the City), in the Caesars Club, in LF Excelsior Level, and in the Promenade Food Court.

Veggie Hot Dogs and Burgers at CitiField

Available at regular food concessions stands at Citi Field: Veggie Hot Dogs and Veggie Burgers. My photo is about as appealing as a hog dog made of soy so I am excluding it from the post. But I'll get a good one during a game. Promise. And no more soy jokes. I actually love tofu. I do.

P.S. You can also get a Veggie Delite (their spelling) at Subway, in the ballpark I mean. 

America’s Most Vegetarian-Friendly Ballparks

For the third consecutive year, Citizens Bank Park (Aramark / Phillies) has been named America’s most vegetarian-friendly ballpark by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). Among PETA’s annual list of the best baseball venues for vegetarians, four of the top five, and five of the top 10 spots, as well as two honorable mentions are servied by Aramark (they're in 13 major league ballparks).

Coors Field (Rockies), Turner Field (Braves) and the Minute Maid Park (Astros) ranked third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Oriole Park at Camden Yards earned PETA’s No. 9 ranking. PNC Park in Pittsburgh and the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum were honorable mentions.

Metrodome Going Green

No one who lives in or around Minneapolis will be surprised to know that the Metrodome is Going Green (because it's a pretty green city, and has the country's second largest bike lane system, which seems to be related to me) .

See the beer that guy is holding? Soon there will be no more regular plastic and all cups will be those biodegradable and compostable corn plastic things we had at the old Yankee stadium. Nice work, Centerplate.

Waste at Yankee Stadium

TFMJ is really into anything "26" (and hopes this is the last year of it) but even he agrees that these heavy "trays" are too much. This is some seriously thick, heavy cardboard in case you want to carry your hot dog and drink from the concession stand at Yankee Stadium to your grandmother's house in Boca, and you're walking, in the rain.

Why so much waste, Yankees?

And, speaking of, I asked a trash guy if anyone was recycling or in any way abiding by the separate trash cans (trash, compost, plastic) and he laughed. Come on! Aren't Yankees fans the elite whatever people? Doesn't that make us the ones who care about the environment? Let's attempt to be green. Earth Day is coming up.

it's pretty dang exciting to see this green effort by the Yankees, and it's pretty annoying to see fans disregarding it. I think the word "compost" overwhelms everyone. "plastic" most people understand, but "compost" needs explanation.

Yankees are Green, and have a Farmers Market!

The Yankees tell us that concession operations at the new stadium incorporate the eco-friendly initiatives found throughout the facility. The Yankees Sustainability Facility Program ensures the efficiency of all equipment while focusing on energy reduction. Beverage cups in the Stadium are made of biodegradable material instead of petroleum-based plastics, and the Yankees are committed to purchasing paper products that are 100% recyclable. By composting and recycling cardboard, glass, metal, plastics and paper, approximately 40% of the Stadium’s trash should be diverted away from landfills, resulting in fewer trash pickups.

And how cool is this: a traditional farmers market carrying fresh fruits and vegetables will be part of the new stadium. the stand is called Melissa's. Cannot wait to check that out.

The Price of Water in Florida

Since I'm all about Florida these days I thought I'd share an interesting story by Mary Ellen Klas (St Petersburg Times/ Miami Herald).

Every day, Nestle Waters of North America sucks up an estimated 500,000 gallons from Madison Blue Springs, a limestone basin a mile north of town. It pipes the 70-degree water to its massive bottling plant and distribution center, fills 102,000 plastic containers an hour, pastes on Deer Park or Zephyrhills labels, boxes it up and ships half of it out of state.

The cost to the company for the water: a one-time $150 local water permit. Like 22 other bottled water companies in Florida, including giants Coca-Cola and Pepsi Co., Nestle's profit is 10 to 100 times the cost of each bottle. And the payment to Florida? Not a dime.

Gov. Charlie Crist wants to change that. He is proposing a 6-cents-a-gallon state tax on water used for commercial water-bottling purposes.

Zephyrhills water is pretty bad. Florida tap water, which isn't great, is better. And, why are we bottling water when the Evergaldes are dry?
