Buried Red Sox Jersey Unearthed

Yconstrjers Everyone knows that Gino Castignoli's David Ortiz jersey was unearthed (after 5 hours of digging through concrete) under the site of a restaurant-to-be at the new Yankee Stadium.
And everyone who reads ScoreboardGourmet knows what I think about adults wearing someone else's name on their back.

But did you hear Castignoli's quote? "I would not go near Yankee Stadium, not for all the hot dogs in the world," he told the Boston Herald and the union that hired him for the job. Of course he relented and worked One Day, during which he had the time to bury the jersey. I love that the greatest reward he could imagine is "all the hot dogs in the world."

What's going to happen to him?
He wasted time but did he really do any harm? Do you really think nothing else was dropped into the foundation? I'm guessing they'll find some cool stuff when they dismantle the other stadium.
I mean, I'm happy there's no trace of Ortiz in the new ballpark but Pressing Charges? This guy wears clothing with someone else's name on it and doesn't have a full-time job - he's miserable enough.

Swedish Hot Dogs and Sports Arenas

SwdhdScoreboard Gourmet is always trying to be more international, sometimes.

Here's some great information from SG's Swedish Correspondent (sort of) Mikael Karlsson:

Mikael tells me his favorite sport is ice-hockey, although it is really a toss-up between that and soccer, proper football y'know...;-)

(that's his emoticon)

His favorite game day food is absolutely Swedish hot-dogs. Boiled, not grilled. They're a much smoother grind than hot-dogs here and the regs as far as what goes in the mix are very strict so they taste more of actual meat than of something you'd probably really don't want to know what it is...

A great place to find Swedish-like hot dogs in the US is: Schaller & Weber
1654 Second Avenue
New York, NY
T: 212-879-3047

No beer ever sold at Swedish sports arenas. Aside from an alcohol free kind, but alcohol free beer doesn't really make much sense since the taste of beer - aside from Guinness and Samual Adams - really leaves a lot to be desired so drinking it without being rewarded with a bit of a buzz feels kind of pointless, IMHO.

Who can tell me more about sports in Sweden? Maybe I should start a whole series on non-US sports. Hmm.

Early Season Baseball: things you only see in April

One of my favorite things about baseball is being outdoors (one of many reasons I don't like, say, Tropicana Field). But Baseball in April in New York City (and Boston and Toronto and everywhere northernish) is a major commitment by fans.
Below are some of the things you do not see later in the season...

Goobers and Gloves Yggloves

Popcorn and Parkas Ypopparka

yankees fans hungry, game or rain

Yhdvend "We're gonna run out of hot dogs; I know it," said a vendor (pictured) at 1:18p, when the rain delay was predicted to be 1h. She didn't make it 3 rows before she was sold out. Yeval

Now we're waiting for the team to evaluate their options re playing the game (also pictured). Yes we think that's Girardi and Cashman out there for five seconds in the damp grass.

Watch the SF Giants Opening Away Game at Home

For the first time ever, the SFGiants will open the ballpark for fans to watch the season opener on the scoreboard on March 31st (Giants vs. Dodgers).
The party begins at 11:00a on Monday, March 31st. Fans can take batting practice on the field, enjoy free hot dogs (first 5,000 people), and watch, live and in-person, Hall of Famer Willie Mays and PA announcer Renel Brooks-Moon officially unveil Comcast Bay Area’s new outfield sign.

The Yankees did something like this last year at Bryant Park and it was much fun. Go. Check it out and let me know what You think. Monday April 7th is the Home Opener, by the way.
