Kosher Playoffs at Yankee Stadium

...and World Series too, thanks to Rabbi Naftali Marrus, who coordinates Restaurants and Catering for the OK Kosher Certification. In case you're wondering, I got this information from a little rag called Kosher Today. Anyhoo, Rabbi Marrus and a team of six mashgichim will busy certifying the four glatt kosher stands at Yankee Stadium.

In an interview in OK Spirit, Rabbi Marrus describes the tedious work that went into arranging for the kosher fare: “To ensure that kosher food and equipment would be completely segregated, a lot of work went into how to best set everything up and how to comply with Yankee protocol – which actually enhanced the kosher program!”

Yankee Stadium's kosher food is prepared by Ouri Nidam of Ouri’s Sports Kosher Catering, which is under OK supervision. In addition to the four stands, kosher food is also supplied to the Legends section.

Kosher Wimbledon

New Kosher Accommodations at Wimbledon Jerusalem…by Idele Ross, KosherToday Middle East Bureau Chief…At the Wimbledon tennis championships, kosher food is available for the first time in the 122-year history of the games. Rabbi David and Sara Cohen are operating a kosher kitchen near the site of the matches. Rabbi Cohen who co-directs Chabad of South London Campuses told the Chabad website that when they found a house near the Wimbledon’s Center Court they knew they had to do something like this during the tournament. They are offering barbecue as well as sandwiches to kosher tennis fans. The Cohens also held an open house on Shabbat featuring a strawberries and cream kiddush. There will also be a special Shabbat Friday night program at the end of the tournament on July 3rd.

Yankee Stadium Shawarma

WalkoffWalk's Rob told me he had a shawarma from the kosher concession cart near the Hard Rock at Yankee Stadium (not pictured; this picture is from the kosher cart up in the right field tier; will try to get an actual picture tomorrow).

Rob had to go to three kosher carts before finding shawarma (middle eastern burrito). Now You and I only need to go to one. Thank him.

He says: The sandwich cost $12 but it was delicious. Yummy spiced chicken with hummus on a long sub roll. Good enough and big enough to split.

Kosher Food at Yankees Fantasy Camp

The New York Yankees just announced the addition of strictly kosher food offerings and Shabbat accommodations at their November 2009 and January 2010 Fantasy Camps. Glatt kosher food will be provided by Weberman Foods with OK supervision.

p.s. $5.25 for italian sausage (right picture); line justified; better than hot dogs of any size, and I think I know why. hint: oink.

Beijing's One Kosher Restaurant

Beijing’s kosher restaurant plans on 300-500 meals daily during Olympics
Jerusalem…by Idele Ross, KosherToday Israel Bureau Chief…As reported, Dini’s, the only kosher restaurant in Beijing, took Olympic strides ahead of the opening of the games to prepare for the increase in traffic.  Ohad Turtinski, manager at Dini’s, told KosherToday that they are planning on serving between 300 and 500 kosher meals a day, and that’s just based on the reservations that have come in. Turtinski said that there is a kosher kitchen in the Olympic village where meals are prepared for the athletes from Israel and elsewhere who keep kosher.  Dini’s is remaining open 24 hours a day during the next two weeks, except for Shabbat, in order to meet the demand. The organizers of  the Beijing Olympics have been extraordinary in their efforts in assuring that all the Jewish people staying in the Olympic village have their Jewish needs met. They provided a rabbi, kosher food, and a makeshift synagogue.

Kosher at Citi Field (the new Shea)

Kosher Sports Inc. will to continue as the exclusive Glatt Kosher concessionaire at Citi Field.

Kosher Sports has been the exclusive Glatt Kosher provider at Shea Stadium since 2006. Their offerings feature Abeles and Heymann Provisions and Oceanside Knish Factory potato knishes. Here's the interesting part (read: somewhat unclear part): as part of the agreement, the Mets and Kosher Sports will donate 250 game tickets to Jewish Charities each year. They need each other to do that?

Passover in Professional Baseball

Last year I was pretty new to the idea of Passover and Kosher and what it all really means. This year, while I still have questions about what it all really means, I am much more educated.

"You're not open during Passover, are you?" I asked the guy behind one of Yankee Stadium's Strikly Kosher carts.
"Of course not," he said.

Even TFMJ thought it was possible that they'd go all Atkins and serve dogs sans buns, but obviously not.

For those of you who may not be observant or aware but still like a kosher dog or knish, Passover starts tomorrow/Saturday night and ends next Saturday night. Better bread up tonight.

Kosher Vending Machines at Fenway

I was on Jewneric.com the other day and found some Scoreboard Gourmet news: Kosher Hotdogs Now Available at Fenway Park in Boston. It's a post by Dave Weinberg about the Hot Nosh, a Kosher vending machine, plugged in for Red Sox fans.

I guess we take Kosher for granted here in NYC. Hopefully someone in Boston can let us know the deal with the food - is it good? hot? expensive? is there a line?

p.s. Bill Bucker threw out the ceremonial first pitch in Tuesday night's Sox v Tigers game. He first declined the offer to do so since Boston fans have been mean to him since 1986, when New Yorkers started thinking of him as a hero. But Bostonians rallied and gave him a great ovation, which is cool. And then the Sox went on to crush the so-called-pennant-worthy Tigers. Hmm.

Coney Combos Sabrett Hot Dogs at MSG

um, what is this? Sabrett hot dogs stuffed into a potato knish; nothing to do with Combos, the delicious pretzel+cheese combo people, by the way. has anyone had one? is it the best thing that ever happened to a hot dog, as advertised? 

I saw the sign as we exited a St. John's game at Madison Square Garden. The concessions were closed but I squeezed my head under a gate and asked where I could find the Coney Combos Hot Dog Treat.
"Do you guys sell those Coney Combos Hot Dogs?" I asked one of the women cleaning the counter.
"Yes," she said.
"Holy cow," I said. "Are they good?"
"They're okay," she said, looking through a pile of soon-to-be-trash foil-wrapped goodies, presumably to show one to me.
"How much do they cost?" I asked.
"Ma'am," another woman addressed me. "We're closed."
"Oh I don't want to buy one," I said. "I'm just wondering how much they cost."

$4.75 for a Coney Combos Sabrett at the Garden.
TFMJ and I are uncertain about the kosherness. it certainly has the vibe (knish + beef hot dog), but we think it's not.
