Brewers to Twins via Cheese Country

Nothing spells (smells?) TrOubLe like me and TFMJ in a cross-state carride with cheese stops, but how can we resist. Sure driving from Milwaukee to Minneapolis takes longer and is considerably more expensive than flying, and sure it's guaranteed nonstop bickering, but The Cheese! Did you know 1 of every 4 pounds of cheese sold in the U.S. was produced in Wisconsin?

In preparation for the trip, and because I was borrowing his car, I gave TFMJ some cheese from Uplands (dairy farm cheese place about an hour west of Madison, WI).
"This tastes like a cross between gruyere and cheddar," said TMFJ of the Pleasant Ridge Reserve.
"Are you just saying that so I'll be nice to you this weekend?" I asked, because he's right, which is incredible. He knows exactly what to say to make me like him. Imagine if he did it all the time.

The larger point is: Road Trip Weekend. Brewers v Royals and Twins v Diamondbacks. That means Miller, Pabst, sausage, tailgating in Milawaukee, exploring the Madison Farmer's Market, cheese!, dinner TBD in Minneapolis, and the Metrodome.

Rich Seubert's dad: major Giants fan and chef owner in WI

obviously I realize the NFL season is over but I was going thought my mini notebook and realized I'd forgotton to mention something very cool...Tom Seubert, the owner and chef at Buck-a-Neer Supper Club in Stratford, WI (major Packers territory), is dad to Rich Seubert, left guard for the New York Giants.

from Tom Silverstein's Journal Sentinal article State of Conflict...which is actually about Mark Tauscher, right tackle for the Green Bay Packers, playing the other WI-native (Seubert), but that's not as interesting to SG as this...

Tom Seubert has decorated one of the walls in his restaurant with Giants memorabilia and he regularly hears from townspeople and friends about how proud they are of his son. But he also knows that on each Sunday, the television sets at the bar have to be tuned into the Packers' game.

So he goes into the kitchen and watches the Giants game by himself. He good-naturedly gets ribbed about his allegiances, but after 36 years as the restaurant's chef and host to 300 or 400 people on Fridays and Saturdays, he's cut some slack.

So are there gameday specials? What's the favorite restaurant food of Packers fans? Are there any other Giants fans in WI? What does Tom make special for Rich to eat? Do tell.

cayenne pepper in your shoe in Green Bay

seems Giants rookie Tight End Kevin Boss has suggested cayenne pepper in your shoe to combat the 3-below weather in Green Bay (third coldest game in history).
I love it. supposedly cayenne powder or pepper in your shoes or socks can help prevent frostbite and warm up your feet. I guess a Western Oregon grad would know about cold.

Cheese v Cheese as Giants take on Packers

Remember baseball, when mayors and senators placed food bets (with each other)? Well, it's football season now and the betting has begun.

As reported by Sewell Chan of the NYTimes...

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg of New York City and Mayor James J. Schmitt of Green Bay, Wis., just announced a “friendly wager” on the outcome of the National Football Conference championship game on Sunday evening, when the Giants visit the Green Bay Packers. The winner advances to the Super Bowl on Feb. 3.

If the Giants win, Mayor Schmitt will send an assortment of Green Bay products to Mayor Bloomberg in New York, including a gift basket from “World Cheese Champion” U.S. Specialty Cheese, featuring 17 cheese spreads totaling roughly 10 pounds; 20 16-ounce aged natural strip steaks from Smithfield Beef; three pounds of award-winning chocolates from Beerntsen’s Candies; and a pair of cheese-wedge sunglasses from Cheese Shades.

If the Packers win, Mayor Bloomberg will send a specially made 10-pound New York-style cheesecake from Carnegie Deli in Manhattan; a case of Brooklyn Lager from Brooklyn Brewery; and 20 pounds of Porterhouse steak from Peter Luger Restaurant in Brooklyn — and as an extra incentive, 6 bottles of Peter Luger steak sauce

Two United States senators, Charles E. Schumer of New York and Herb Kohl of Wisconsin, also caught the football-betting fever on Wednesday. Mr. Schumer put up Junior’s cheesecake against Mr. Kohl’s cheese from his state.
